RECAPS OF RAVEN @ SABU BENEFIT SHOW
[posted on December 21, 2004]

More feedback continues to stream from Raven's appearance at the Sabu Benefit show. Here's a couple of more fan reports from event held on 12/12:

From Susan:
"I attended the Sabu benefit show as well as the autograph signing before the show. I was able to meet most of the wrestlers that were on the card and everyone was polite and friendly. I showed Raven a picture I took of him as Johnny Polo to which he replied, "How did I go from Johnny Polo to this?" After being a fan of his for over 12 years it was great to see how funny and nice he was. The show itself was amazing and after attending tons of wrestling shows in the past this one was definately something special. My friends and I were able to hang out with Raven after the show and he couldn't have been a nicer guy! The entire day was a lot of fun and is something I will never forget."

From Dopper:
"Before the main event Jimmy Hart took over as ring announcer to introduce Sabu. All night he had been talking about how Sabu was going to speak to his fans and thank us all for being there. He grabbed the mike after 5 or 10 minutes of "SA-BU!" and "THANK YOU SA-BU!" chants and said .... "Thank you", gave Jimmy the mic back and went to sit at ringside to watch the main event.

To be honest the guy looked terrible. He looked really thin and was struggling to walk. As each man came out, they all cut a promo about why Sabu is such a legend. Just imagine hearing a promo from Sabu, then 3 great talkers Mick Foley, Shane Douglas and Raven all in a row! It was just fantastic.

Foley talked about their matches in ECW and why Sabu is a true wrestling great in and out of the ring. Douglas then came in and talked about how he has said for many years ECW was built on the Franchise's shoulders, but he had to admit Sabu is just as responsible for the success of ECW as anyone. This obviously got deafening "E-C-W!" chants. Then Raven came out. The ring announcer did a really long introduction while Raven sat in the corner, which anyone who has heard his shoot interviews will testify must have been written by Raven himself. It was hilarious with lines like "He has appeared on such legendary TV shows as Jenny Jones & Family Feud, and hopes that unlike last time they met .... Mr Douglas will not vomit all over him this evening."

Raven himself then grabbed the mic and cut one of the best tongue-in-cheek heel promos ever. The bits I can remember were:

"I don't wanna be here tonight. I hate charities, I hate Sabu, I hated his uncle The Shiek, I hate Douglas, I hate Foley, I hate Detroit, I hate you fans, and I hate Christmas."

"... and by the way Foley, don't be trying to steal all the heat tonight like you always do. If you put the sock anywhere near me I ain't selling it! Put it anywhere near my mouth and I'll bite your god-damn fingers off."

Foley retorted with a promo of his own, ending it with: ".... and if I put the sock in your mouth tonight you better sell that son of a bitch like a million bucks!"

As the match went on Raven grabbed the mic at least 4 or 5 more times and Foley did the same.

Raven said he'd had enough and was leaving, then Foley said "Hey Raven I've got two words for ya!"

The crowd shouted "SUCK IT!" and Foley replied: "No, not suck it. What is this 1999? .... JOHNNY POLO!"

The crowd then started a loud chant of "JOHN-NY PO-LO!" followed by "DE-AN DOUG-LAS!" over and over.

Really fun match, Foley & Douglas double teamed to put Raven through a table.

At another point after some brawling in the crowd Raven again mocked Foley calling him Fat-man and stuff before Mick grabbed the mic and amazingly said, and I quote:

"How about you get on with the match and stop stinking up the fucking place!"

The match ended when Raven blocked a Socko attempt and Sabu climbed through the ropes, put on the sock and did the Socko Claw on Raven leading to Douglas getting the pin to end the show.

Raven then did another heel promo before getting serious and saying that he loves Sabu, he's a great bloke and everything .... but he still hates all us fans.

So after the show Foley posed for Polaroids for about 30-40 mins and Jeff Hardy did too .... for about 5 mins.

Great show, well worth making the trip from England even though I only spent a total of 47 hours there!

The DVD is scheduled to be released in January with commentary by Joey Styles and Cyrus, which should be great, as well as interviews with all the wrestlers who appeared talking about Sabu. Looking forward to it.

And just for you fans, Raven has graciously provided the entire text of his promo for publication here EXCLUSIVELY on TheRavenEffect.com. Raven is auctioning the handwritten original draft, complete and uncensored on the Auctions subsite HERE.

From Raven:
"Raven: weighing in at 249 lbs from the Terrordome. He is an internationally known celebrity who has appeared on such C-level shows as "Donny and Marie" and "Win Ben Stein's Money."

He was the creator of the b.W.o – the Blue World Order, featuring Big Stevie Cool and Da Blue Guy. He was one third of the legendary comedy Trio along with Steve Austin and Brian Pillman. He is the inventor of white out and, for ladies, the jackrabbit. He was a member of the Cartel, led by The Boss, on Global Championship Wrestling, along with Rip Rogers and Makhan Singh and a 4th person he can’t remember. He once had his feet tickled by Cactus Jack, while seducing a woman in her bed as Cactus hid on her floor, not 3 hours after he and Raven first met. He once three way heeled as room with Cactus Jack and DDP and, when nothing was on TV, Raven and Cactus Jack decided to watch Droopy Dog, even though it was two against one and he had the least seniority in the room. That is why DDP is known as “The Emperor.”

Raven would also like it mentioned that the last time he and Shane Douglas wrestled, Shane Douglas threw up on him. Raven would also like everyone to have the Disco Inferno’s home phone number, 770-630-****"

RECAPS OF RAVEN @ SABU BENEFIT SHOW
[posted on December 16, 2004]

Many visitors from TheRavenEffect.com attended the special Sabu Benefit Show in Belleville, MI put together by BCW promoter Scott D'Amore. The benefit was to raise funds for Sabu, who has been hospitalized for several months due to back injuries suffered earlier this year. Many of TNA's top names arrived to pay tribute to one of hardcore wrestling's legends. Here's the impressions of a varied sample of visitors from this site who wrote in with their thoughts:

From James Caldwell:
"I thought this was the best show I've seen at the Diamondback, EVER. I've been going to the BCW/PTW shows there for a while now, Scott D'Amore and Big Dave always put on great shows, but this blew every one of them out of the water.

My only complaint was people booing some of the workers. This show was a night to put all the face vs. heel shit aside and to honor an innovator, a legend, SABU. It was great that Sabu showed up to the event.

Match of the night was AJ Styles vs. Christopher Daniels. The crowd was split for these guys, half the crowd was chanting "FALLEN ANGEL" and the other half chanting "AJ STYLES"

Raven's match was great. I've always enjoyed his in ring work, and especially enjoy his promos, the man is a genius. Shane Douglas is great too, his promos are some of the best in the business. And, you can never go wrong with Foley, he is one of the best ever.

Overall, the show was better than any show I've been to in 2004, and that includes multiple WWE TV shows and one WWE PPV event. The talent amassed for the Sabu show was absolutely amazing. Big props to everyone involved with the show, Scott D'Amore, Big Dave, the crew at the Diamondback, all the wrestlers, and most definitely, the biggest props go to Sabu for being the innovator he was, which ultimately gave us all the great workers we see today, guys like Jeff Hardy, AJ Styles, Chris Daniels, Petey Williams to name a few of the high flyers, and guys like Raven, Shane Douglas, and Mick Foley who alongside Sabu built their careers to what they are today, and that is being some of the greatest wrestlers out there today, if not ever."

From Davi Trusty:
"I work with Sabu's Cousins in The All World Wrestling League, yes the sons of THE Sheik. I was at the show and, of course, I was hanging out with Sabu. The crowd response was, and is, unbelievable. From match one until the main event, the crowd was hot and popping for the wrestlers.

The momentum was at a fever pitch by the time Shane Douglas made his way to the ring, and trust me, knowing Sabu on a personal level, and I am not stating that we are best of friends or anything of that nature, it was a VERY big deal for him to say "Thank You." If you were expecting him to give a dissertation on how much he appreciated everything that all of the fans and the wrestlers and promoters were doing, then you don't know him very well at all.

I had the opportunity to talk to Raven and I will say he is genuinely a hilarious and quick witted man, as is Mick Foley and for those two to go back and forth like they were in the ring was undoubtedly one of the funniest bits I have ever seen."

From Sue:
"I was at the Sabu benefit too. We ended up with front row seats. The whole show was great! Many funny Raven/Foley moments ... like when Foley got the whole crowd to yell "Johnny Polo" at Raven. Another golden moment was when Raven said to Foley something like "You better not use that sock on me because I won't sell it and I'll bite your fingers off!". To which Foley replied "If I do use it, you better sell that son of a bitch like a million bucks!" In Raven's intro which he had written and was read by the ring announcer, he noted that the last time he fought Shane Douglas, Douglas threw up on him. You have to get the tape of the show when it comes out. Just describing it does not do it justice!"

From Ruin:
"I got to catch the SABU show over the weekend and it was great! We were in the front of the line and still came in just after Raven stopped taking photos with fans. We waited around after the show but couldn't catch him. Raven put on a great match and everyone in attendance was in good spirits. I hope Sabu gets well soon. Thanks for Disco Inferno's phone number, Raven!"

We'd like to thank all the site visitors who contributed to this feature with their candid thoughts on the show. You can view 12 photos of his appearance on the show HERE, EXCLUSIVELY on TheRavenEffect.com

If you have a report of this show and/or photos of Raven you'd like to see posted here, please feel free to e-mail them to submissions@theraveneffect.com
